WorkCover's
- New Policy
Testing & Tagging of Electrical Equipment.
WorkCover NSW has advised that the Minister of Industrial
Relations has recently approved the position paper
and checklist on the Testing and Tagging of electrical
equipment used in the workplace. WorkCover will
apply the legislative requirement i.e. 'regularly
inspect, test and maintain electrical equipment'
to mean a procedure that ensures plug-in type electrical
equipment is inspected and maintained in a safe
condition.
To assist employers in implementing a procedure
that will meet the requirements of this policy,
WorkCover has designed an electrical equipment inspection
checklist. By using this checklist and dealing with
any identified issues an employer will have addressed
the requirements for the inspection and testing
of plug-in electrical equipment at their workplace.
In most office environments the evaluation, inspection,
testing and tagging need only be carried out at
intervals generally between two (2) and five (5)
years. Foreman Data Pty Ltd is qualified and equipped
to setup documentation, and carry out all requirements
under Australian Standards AS/NZS 3760:2003 in accordance
with the WorkCover legislation.

New Electrical Regulation for
Plugs
As of April 3, 2005 (some states and regions have
granted an extension to this date) all products
that have electrical plug tops sold to end users
are required to have insulated pins. Research has
shown that with insulated protection applied to
the pins the safety of a workplace can be greatly
enhanced. Previously electrocution occurred from
contact with live electrical pins exposed from an
incorrectly or partially inserted electrical plug;
the fault occurring when the pins come into contact
with a thin conductive material the likes of a metal
knife or a Venetian blind.
There is no requirement at this stage to replace
or upgrade existing appliances or leads to comply
with the new standard however if you have any areas
of concern and would like to upgrade to the safer
system we can attend to this for you.

Electrical
Safety Alert
Atco Controls issued a Trade Alert in March 1998
in relation to the ATCO "CP" type lighting
capacitors. As a result of the Trade Alert and an
inspection and replacement program carried out with
assistance from the lighting industry, a large number
of potentially affected capacitors were identified,
removed and replaced. Atco Controls has since received
reports of several incidents which may be associated
with potentially affected capacitors. While Atco
Controls expects there are only a few of these capacitors
still in use. Affected capacitors can be identified
by the brand name ATCO and the model "CP"
type 250v rated lighting capacitor, with the Batch
Number 20/94 to 32/96, sold between May 1994 to
August 1996. It is possible that a small number
of the affected capacitors within the Batch 20/9
to 32/96 could fail in a destructive manner and
depending upon the structure of the fitting in which
they have been installed could result in a fire.
These Capacitors are typically used in the internal
workings of fluorescent lighting for Power Factor
correction which makes the fitting run more efficiently
which in turn costs less to run. In any event these
capacitors are nearing the end of their effective

BRAIN TEASER - THE FLIGHT OF THE FALCON
Two cyclists are situated 60 miles apart. One has
a falcon on his shoulder. The cyclists start riding
towards each other at the same time, both maintaining
a constant speed of 30 mph. The moment they begin,
the falcon flies off the cyclist's shoulder and
towards the other. The falcon flies at a constant
ground speed of 45 mph. When the falcon meets the
other rider, he reverses direction and flies back
to the first cyclist (who is now considerably closer).
The falcon continues this back and forth pattern
until the riders finally meet. How far did the falcon
fly?
