Smoke Alarms Save
Lives
On March 10, 2006 the NSW Government gazetted new regulations
requiring smoke alarms in homes and other places people sleep.
Owners will have 6 months to comply.
The type of smoke alarm to be installed depends on the type
of building. Private dwellings such as detached houses, terrace
houses, town houses, villa units, apartments, home units, flats,
caretaker flats, single residences above shops, moveable homes,
but not tents, campervans, caravans and the like have the building
owner's choice between Smoke Alarms that are hard-wired to the
mains electricity power supply with battery backup or Smoke
Alarms that are solely powered by an internal battery. All units
must be AS 3786-1993 compliant.
The other class of building type is Shared Accommodation such
as boarding houses, guest houses, hostels, backpackers accommodation,
bed and breakfast accommodation, hotels, motels, schools, health
care buildings, detention centres, certain residential accommodation
for the aged, children and people with disabilities, hospitals
and nursing homes. Building owner's have the choice between
Smoke Alarms that are hard-wired to the mains electricity power
supply with battery backup or Smoke Alarms that are powered
by a non-removable 10 year long-life internal battery permanently
connected to the smoke alarm. All units must be AS 3786 compliant.

New Laws for Testing and
Tagging
Clauses
64 and 65 of the OHS Regulation 2001 have been amended to
simplify the requirements for the "testing and tagging"
of electrical equipment by identifying workplace environments
where testing and tagging is warranted, such as construction
sites and other hostile operating environments.
It has been recognised that in many work environments, certain
electrical equipment does not warrant a rigorous inspection
and testing procedure due to their inherent low level of risk.
This means that extension cords and portable appliances in
the normal office environment will no longer have to be under
a testing and tagging schedule.
